Economic Development

MBC is uniquely driven as an economic development force in Virginia, partnering with local and state entities for use of MBC’s open-access fiber network as an economic incentive.

MBC’s open-access business model ensures a competitive playing field for last-mile service providers, which means lower cost and greater value for Southern Virginia communities.

Open-access data transport allows businesses and community anchor institutions to have robust and reliable broadband connectivity from their location in Southern Virginia to the rest of the world utilizing the provider of their choice.

Private Sector Investment

MBC has generated successful outcomes from investments including:

Manufacturing

MBC partnered with state and regional leaders to attract U.K.-based manufacturer Hardide Coatings, Inc., to establish its first Virginia operation. This investment created new high-paying jobs in Henry County.

Government

Sussex County government complex showcases how local governments and MBC working together drive innovation. Installation of MBC fiber to the government complex lowered costs, increased bandwidth and connectivity, and transformed Sussex County’s communications plan.

Education

Surry County Public Schools accessed MBC’s fiber through its Internet Service Provider to increase bandwidth at a fraction of the cost. Increased bandwidth led to online educational resources including distance learning and online testing.

MBC took the lead to open a West Coast Office to engage business, corporate site selection consultants, and industry associations about the benefits of expanding to Southern Virginia.
